Purpose
CSEC examinations are the standard high school-leaving examinations for students across the English-speaking Caribbean. They certify a student's academic readiness for entry into higher education institutions or the workforce.
Subjects
A wide range of subjects is offered, typically grouped into Sciences, Humanities, Business, and Technical/Vocational studies. Core subjects often include Mathematics, English A, and a Science subject.
Format
Most exams consist of three papers: Paper 1 (Multiple Choice), Paper 2 (Essay/Extended Response), and Paper 3 (School-Based Assessment or Alternative Paper). The School-Based Assessment (SBA) is coursework completed over one or two years and contributes a significant percentage to the final grade.
Grading
Results are reported as Grades I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII, with Grade I being the highest. Grades I-III are generally considered acceptable passes by regional universities and colleges.
Target Audience
Secondary school students, usually aged 16-18, in the Caribbean region and select international centers.
Prerequisites
Generally, students register through their respective schools having completed the prescribed curriculum for the subject.
